Relief as Anambra petroleum marketers shelve strike, return to business

Normalcy has returned to Anambra State following the strike declared by the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN) on Wednesday, which partly paralyzed economic activities in the state. The marketers had closed their stations, refusing to dispense fuel to motorists, forcing commercial drivers to park their vehicles, while residents either trekked long distances to work or stayed at home.

DAILY POST gathered that the marketers shelved the strike after its leadership met with officials of Anambra State Government Wednesday evening.

The marketers had embarked on strike in solidarity with some of its members, whose fuel stations had been demolished without compensation because they were built in residential areas.

Our correspondent, who went round the capital city of Awka, reports that fuel stations have now opened for business, with products being sold at normal price.

The state Commissioner for Public Utilities and Domestic Water Development, Obi Nwankwo told newsmen that, “Both sides (Government and IPMAN) have agreed that within three weeks of this agreement, they will form a joint committee to discuss in details the issue of compensation and relocation of the two filling stations, around which the strike revolves.’’

Mr Primus Odili, the Chief of Staff to Gov. Willie Obiano had led the Anambra Government delegation to the meeting hosted at the DSS State Headquarters in Awka.
