Regional security: Jonathan, ECOWAS leaders to meet in Abuja today


President Goodluck Jonathan will, on Monday in Abuja, host the 46th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, his office said in a statement on Sunday.

The forum, according to the statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, will deliberate on the current political and security situation in the sub-region.

It said that Jonathan and other participating Heads of State and Government would also receive a briefing on recent developments in Burkina Faso.

The statement said that the summit would also review the report of the 33rd Meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.

“ Also on the agenda are the consideration and adoption of the 2014 annual report of the President of the ECOWAS Commission.

“ The report of the 73rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers will also be considered and adopted.

“Also on the agenda of the summit is the election of the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for next year,” the statement said.

The statement also said that Jonathan and President John Mahama of Ghana, who is the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, would present statements to the one-day summit before it goes into a closed-door session.

It added that the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr Nkosazana Zuma, and the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for West Africa, Mr Mohammed Chambas, would also present statements.

“Some of the participating Heads of State and Government have already arrived Abuja ahead of the opening of the summit.

“A communiqué on the summit’s decisions is expected at the conclusion of their deliberations on Monday,” the statement said. NAN
