Red Cross Society congratulates Nigerians over peaceful conduct of elections

The Nigerian Red Cross Society has congratulated Nigerians over the peaceful conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Vice-Chairman of the Anambra Chapter of the society, Prof. Peter Katchy, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra on Saturday, that the Red Cross did not record any emergency while voting was on.

Katchy said that though there were clear cases of shortcoming on the part of INEC officials, voters remained patient and showed understanding with the officials of the electoral body.

“In most of the places we have visited today, there has not been violence; people have conducted themselves very well.

“There is no rancour; there is no quarrel at all; the people were very anxious again to cast their votes; they want to exercise their franchise; that is what I noticed today. And that is very good.

“People are anxious to cast their votes; they are not interested in any trouble. And we have not seen anybody fomenting trouble or trying to plan anything.

“The voters are very happy; the voters are not even antagonistic to the INEC officials; rather, they are sympathetic with the INEC official over the handicap of the card reader.”

The vice-chairman said that the peaceful and orderly conduct of Nigerians during the election would serve as testimony to the entire world that Nigerians preferred to live together “as one indivisible entity”.

He said, “I am sure this peaceful conduct of Nigerians during the elections will tell the world volumes of our political will and willingness to move forward.” NAN
