The Defense Headquarters has debunked reports in some sections of the media, suggesting that the recalled General Officer Commanding (GOC), the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State, Major-General Abubakar Mohammed, has been secretly retired from service.
A tweet by the DHQ has it that “the former GOC of 7 Division has not been retired as being propagated by the Media. The General is still in active service as at today.”
The high-ranking officer was recalled following a mutiny by several soldiers under his command. Twelve of the soldiers have been convicted and sentenced to death while a few others were discharged from service.
Since his recall in May 2014 to the Defense Headquarters in Abuja, General Mohammed’s future in the army has remained in the balance, as he is yet to be re-assigned.
