Real Madrid fought back to draw 3-3 with Sevilla in the return leg of their Copa del Rey tie on Thursday night, to create a new record for Spanish clubs going unbeaten in all competitions.

Danilo’s own goal saw Madrid go behind at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, before Marco Asensio levelled three minutes after the break. Sevilla established a two-goal lead through new boy Stevan Jovetic and Vicente Iborra. But two late goals from Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema, ensured they broke the record.

It is the 40th game they have not tasted defeat.

Zinedine Zidane’s men had broken their own club record before Christmas, when they defeated Deportivo La Coruna 3-2.

Their 5-0 win over Granada in La Liga on Saturday, saw them draw level with Barcelona’s record set in the 2015/2016 season under Luis Enrique of 39 matches unbeaten.

Juventus hold the European all-time record for an unbeaten run of 43 matches in all competitions in the 2011/2012 season, when Antonio Conte was in charge.
