Over 200 houses have been reportedly destroyed by rainstorm in Ekiti State, in the first two months of the year.
The General Manager, State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Jide Borode, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, said the disaster mainly affected four local government areas of the state.
He expressed shock at the effect of the rainstorm and the loss suffered by residents whose houses were destroyed.
Borode, however, noted that there was the need to be grateful to God as there was no report of death.
“Affected communities include Ado metropolis, Emure, Ise and Erinjiyan, in the Ekiti West LGA of the state with estimated damage to run into hundreds of millions of naira.
“People in the state should avoid building houses in flood-prone areas, the best period to acquire land is during the rainy season when flood prone-areas could be easily identified,” Borode said
He further called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the victims, saying the effect of the damage was too massive to be left for the state government alone to handle.
