Sequel to reports making the rounds about some groups breaking away from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), a group under the aegis of Patriotic Christian Youths of Nigeria (PCYN) on Monday called on all Christians to rise in support of the new CAN National Leadership towards defending the unity of the church in Nigeria, urging all Christians to disregard the rumours and insinuations that CAN has broken up.
Leader of the Group, Evangelist Simon Timothy Nasso, made the appeal in a press statement made available to journalists in Jos.
It reads, “The attention of the Patriotic Christian Youths of Nigeria (PCYN) has been drawn to a press release by unknown organizations called Concern Christian of Nigeria and Northern Nigeria Christian led by one Rev. Luka Shehu and Mr Peter Luka on the plans to break up from CAN.
“But for the avoidance of doubt, CAN is a registered umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria whose members are drawn from church groups and constituted into blocs, forming the body of CAN and CAN as a body does not register individuals or organisations unless they come under one of the five blocs.
“Therefore, it is complete falsehood, misrepresentation and mischievous the propaganda that a group in CAN has broken away, so CAN has not been divided and will not be divided because of few individuals who lost the election of being in some positions,” the statement stressed.
“We know that the enemies of the church have taken the battle of sponsoring discords among us Christians, but we must reassure the church that the gate of hell shall not prevail against the growth of Christians.
The statement encourage the Rev. Supo Ayokunle-led CAN Exco not to be distracted by few individuals who for selfish reasons want to destroyed the unity of the church, but to focus towards uniting the entire Christians in the country.
“We wish to encourage the CAN leaders to forgive those individuals who are working for their selfish interest, for they do not know what they are doing and pursue peace and reconciliation with all men.”
