Protest, as fuel tanker kills student in Osun

There is palpable tension at Owode-ede, a town in Osun State, as residents protested the death of an undergraduate, identified as Segun, who was crushed by a fuel-laden tanker on Thursday.

The protesters, who blocked the popular Gbogan-Ibadan expressway with burning tyres blamed the government for the failure to construct speed breakers along the axis, which they said could have prevented the unfortunate incident.

DAILY POST gathered that the fuel laden tanker was driving against the traffic around 9:am and ran over the young man also known as Dada in the area.

According to an eye witness, who identified herself as Bose, some commercial motorcyclists close to the scene of the incident pursued the tanker immediately, but the driver escaped as he ran into Zone XI police command in Osogbo.

He said some angry motorcyclists tried to get him out of the police command but were prevented and manhandled by the the police, which resulted to the protest.

Meanwhile, scores of police officers and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to the scene to prevent breakdown of law and order.

The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) in the state, SP Folashade Odoro, when contacted said the vehicle had been impounded by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), adding that investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.
