Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, has petitioned the House of Representatives over what she called consistent “harassment” by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
This was disclosed by a member of the House, Lovette Idisi during Wednesday’s plenary.
Idisi, who is a legislator from Delta state, quoted Patience as citing section 36 of the 1999 constitution as amended.
According to the legislator, “This petition is in line with section 36 where every citizen is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“Mr. Speaker, here is a petition on the constant harassment of the former first lady. It was sent to my office. With the leave of the house, I seek your permission to lay the petition before the house.”
The Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara referred the petition to the House committee of public petitions.
Recall that the anti-graft agency had recently ordered the freezing of some bank accounts , belonging to the former First Lady due to its ongoing investigation of alleged money laundering.
EFCC had also confirmed that Mrs Jonathan was being investigated for money laundering, though no case has been instituted against her in any court yet.
