The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, on Monday, expressed great concern over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The body pleaded that the situation as well as the disagreement required immediate resolution.
ASUU had on July 1 embarked on an industrial action, in protest of the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement it had with the Federal Government.
A terse statement issued by Prof. Kimse Okoko, the Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, in Abuja, lamented over the collateral consequences of the strike as it relates to the Post-UTME screening and the semester examinations in some universities, as well as the general dislocation of the Universities’ academic calendar.
“The committee of pro-chancellors wishes to appeal to all parties concerned to dispassionately expedite action to resolve the matter soonest.”
“On our part, we would work assiduously towards ensuring quick resolution of the impasse,” the Pro-Chancellors promised.
The striking lecturers had threatened that they would not resume work, until their demands were fully met.
The Federal Government, after last week’s weekly executive council meeting appealed to the body to call off the strike, promising to look into all issues raised.
However, the last meeting between the Federal government and ASUU ended in a deadlock as the University body remained adamant over its demands.
