As different individuals and groups continue to lobby for the vacant position of Deputy Governor of Borno state following the death of Zanna Umar Mustapha, Biu elders and youths have endorsed former Chairman of the Presidential Task ForceTeam on pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed maina as their choice.
Abdulrasheed Maina becomes the latest name to be added to the list of potential Deputy Governors of Borno, following the request made to Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima, citing Maina’s track record of service.
A statement jointly issued in Abuja by Biu Emirate Political Leaders and Youths Vanguard for the Promotion of Biu, at the end of their meeting in Abuja, called on Governor Shettima to be meticulous in the choice of a successor to the late Zanna Umar Mustapha, as any wrong choice could have far reaching socio-economic and political implications on the relationships of the diverse interests in Borno state.
According to them, Maina remains one of the most patriotic civil servants ever, and one of the brilliant young brains from the state, as such; Borno state stands to benefit from his rich experiences and robust contributions to the economic development of this country.
While calling on Governor Shettima not to hesitate in nominating him as his deputy, the groups said Maina has been an inspiration to many young men from his native Biu town and will break the seeming impasse in the choice of the deputy governor, as he has no political ambition beyond serving his people.
Spokesman of the groups and Convener of the Youth Vanguard For promotion of Biu, Sule Ibrahim Biu told journalists at the end of their meeting at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers that, while they concur to the Governor’s prerogative to pick his deputy, they have the duty to guide him, as the choice normally comes from amongst the people of Biu.
He said, “our support for Abdulrasheed Maina is without prejudice whatsoever to the Governor’s prerogative of picking somebody of his own choice, but we are convinced that our recommendation is in the best interest of the state and the general good of the system”.
“We know Governor Kashim Shettima is an intelligent young man who deserves an equally intelligent person to combine with, in order to bring about the desired turnaround of Borno state, and Abdulrasheed Maina is his best bait”, they argued.
While condemning those who have been unjustly vilifying him, the youths and elders said Maina was a great asset to Nigeria as a whole and Borno state in particular and deserves every support as encouragement for him to continue serving the country.
“Borno state should not allow such a talent like Abdulrasheed Maina, coming from the state to waste, and we feel we should add our voices to the clamour for him to be seriously considered for the vacant position of deputy Governor. We are ready to support him any day,” they affirmed.
