Presidency insists Jonathan did not sign single-term agreement

The Presidency on Monday maintained that President Goodluck Jonathan at no time before the 2011 general elections, signed a single-term agreement with any individual or group.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, reiterated this in a chat with the PUNCH on Monday in Abuja.

Spokesman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, had said that the crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party would be resolved if Jonathan respected agreements he entered into with stakeholders before the 2011 elections.

“Our understanding of the G-5 governors is that they want governors to be carried along in the management of their party; they want internal democracy and they want an end to divisions within the party, and for President Jonathan to respect agreements he entered into voluntarily with stakeholders,” he said.

There are speculations that five aggrieved northern governors – Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso (Kano), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto – had made the demand when they met President Goodluck Jonathan last week.

In his reaction, Gulak asked Governor Babangida Aliyu, who had earlier made the claim of the one-term deal, to produce a copy of the agreement.

He said, “Rather than insisting on an agreement that does not exist – since anybody can contest for the highest office in the land, those who are so interested should declare their interest and contest.

Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, while speaking through his media aide, Ahmad Sajo, said he and his colleagues did not discuss a single-term agreement with the President, adding that only issues on PDP crisis were raised.

“The governors did not discuss anything about single term agreement with the President. As governors, they are free to meet with the President to discuss the state of the nation because they have responsibilities to their states.”, the aide said.
