A pregnant teenage girl, identified only as Deborah has been rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, in Abia State after she sought to take her life in a forest.
The victim, an indigene of Ariaria, in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state, was rescued from a forest in Ossah Mission Hill, Umuahia, the state capital.
According to Nigerian Tribune, the 18-year-old girl had lost hope in life when her mother, Mrs Happiness remarried after her father died in 2013 and abandoned her with her other three sisters.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Walter Akubiro Chika, confirmed her rescue on Friday, saying all efforts made to re-write her future and that of her siblings could not yield any fruit hence, she decided to run to her Aba-based boyfriend, David, who hails from Owerri, Imo State.
“Deborah took in for her boyfriend in the course of their living together, but he denied the pregnancy and pushed her out of the house.
“So having been overwhelmed by her unbearable condition without a helping hand, she resorted to wandering in the street until she made up her mind on committing suicide.
“Fortunately for her, an officer of NSCDC attached to the presiding pastor of Heavenly Jerusalem Assembly Ossah sighted her in the forest and rescued her.
“Efforts made by NSCDC Anti-Child Trafficking Unit to reach the mother of the girl and her boyfriend proved abortive,” Chika noted, assuring the victim of adequate care by the corps and a brighter future for her irrespective of her situation.
The Commandant, however, mandated the anti-child trafficking unit of the corps to carry its duty diligently to ensure all process towards handing the victim over to the Women Development Ministry in the state, even as he enjoined the general public to always give helping hand to vulnerable persons in the society, as such gesture goes a long way in blessing the society.
