The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Dr. Anthony Akah, has blamed vandalism for the drop in power supply across the nation.

Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Consumer Protection Council, CPC, he said power supply through the national grid which peaked at 5000mw in the past two weeks had dropped below 2,800mw due to the activities of vandals.

Akah in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs Department of NERC, Dr. Usman Abba- Arabi, in Abuja expressed dissatisfaction over the spate of vandalism in the power sector.

The NERC boss called on the public and the CPC to collaborate with Distribution Companies, DISCOs, and security agencies to ensure the safety of electrical installations.

According to the statement, the regulatory body would soon compel the DISCOs to publish their meter deployment schedules, adding that the publication would ensure adherence to the meter roll out plan contained in the performance agreement signed with government.

It said, “Such publication will make unmetered customers to be aware of the estimated period they have to wait before they can be metered.’’

NERC also stated that it has issued warning to DISCOs to desist from wrongful estimated billings and the acts of compelling customers to buy, install and repair transformers and poles.
