The Senate on Monday morning directed that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, appears before it to explain what led to the postponement of the general elections earlier scheduled for February 14 and 28, 2015 but are now to hold on March 28 and April 11, 2015.
Senate Leader, Mr. Victor Ndoma Egba, sponsored a motion on the floor to argue that it was crucial for Jega to appear before the upper chamber of the National Assembly to explain the state of preparedness of INEC, and the underlying reasons why the elections were postponed.
Reacting to the motion, Mr. George Akume, representing Benue North West, called for the service chiefs to be summoned as well since it was on their behest that the elections were postponed.
Stressing that, “Those who asked Jega to postpone the elections because they could not provide security should be summoned as well,” Akume said, “We want to hear from them why they cannot provide security for the elections.”
The foregoing led Senate President, David Mark to announce that the INEC chairman would appear before the Senate on Wednesday. He however noted that the Senate would not hesitate to summon the Service Chiefs if the need arises for them to explain their role in the shift of the elections dates.
