Pope Benedict XVI launches official Twitter account

DailyPost can authoritatively confirm that Pope Benedict XVI will officially join Twitter on December 12. The information says the pope will be twitting in eight languages, with @pontifex as his tweeter handle. This will run within the Christmas period, the Vatican confirmed on Monday.

“The first tweets will be answers to questions sent to the pope on matters of faith. The public can start sending them now,” the Vatican said.

Already 2,435 people are following the Pope since the announcement was made. An introductory message on the account is quoted thus: “Welcome to the official Twitter page of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.”

The Pope will be responding to languages such as Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and other languages that Vatican confirms could be added in future.

“The pope’s presence on Twitter is a concrete expression of his conviction that the Church must be present in the digital arena,” the Vatican said while speaking on the twitter handle.

The statement further revealed that Pope Benedict wanted “to ensure that the good news of Jesus Christ and the teaching of his Church is permeating the forum of exchange and dialogue that is being created by social media.”
