Whitney Houston, an American pop music queen who ruled the pop scene until she got her beautiful voice and regal image destroyed by illicit use of drug, erratic behaviour and controversial marriage to Bobby Brown, died Saturday at the age of 48.
The singer, whose hits include “I will Always Love You,” was found dead in her room at the Beverly Hilton, hours before a traditional pre-Grammys dinner at the hotel where she was reportedly due to perform.
However, musicians, gathered ahead of the Grammys on Sunday evening, lined up to pay tribute to the singer, who sold over 170 million records before descending into a very public battle with substance abuse.
Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen confirmed Houston’s death to reporters outside the Beverly Hilton stating that that Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. in her room on the fourth floor of the hotel. Her body is still left lying there as Beverly Hills detectives were investigating.
“There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time,” Rosen affirmed.
