Former governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Magatakarda Wamakko has blamed past leaders for the nation’s economic woes, stating that the last 56 years of Nigeria’s independence has been about self-centeredness.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja, Wamakko pointed out that it was unfortunate that leaders have not worked at ensuring equal development in regions across the country thus giving credence to regional agitation, a situation he emphasised has also created tribal irredentists.
Explaining, he said the frontiers of the economy has not been opened to accommodate all categories of people, saying it was only a privileged few that were enjoying the commonwealth which, according to him, has heightened criminality over time.
“Of course, as at today, the nation is facing insecurity challenges, emergence of kidnapping which has not been thought of in the past as a result of lopsidedness in our economy,” the former governor said.
He added that Nigeria’s economic recession, notwithstanding that it was a global trend, was occasioned by lack of leadership qualities and long period of unchecked corruption by successive administrations.
Wamakko was however optimistic that the country would overcome the recession, while asking Nigerians to be united in dealing with the situation
He emphasised that the human and capital resources, which the country was endowed with, was capable of being a solution, but cautioned that it was not a time to whip up sentiments under any guise.
“It is a fact that Nigeria has the capacity to get out of this economic downturn, looking at our activities since 1960. The capital and human resources which the nation was endowed with is enough as a plough back to greatness,” he maintained.
The senator pointed out that other countries that have experienced recession in the past got professionals from other nations residing in their territory with a view to solving their economic problems and it worked.
He called on government to look for professionals in the Diaspora as it takes steps out of the present difficulty, stressing that Nigerians were always wonderful at tackling challenges of this nature.
