In order to avoid the re-occurrence of a fatal clash between the students of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State and the masqueraders of the host community, the Rector of the institution, Prof. Godwin Onu, on Thursday announced that the polytechnic would close academic activities during the annual masquerade festival of the host community.
DailyPost source in the institution had confirmed that Oko youth are still fuming over last year’s clash between them and the student that led to the closure of the school.
Recall that the students of the institution and youth of the community clashed last year over the community masquerade festival, resulting to the closure of the polytechnic for many months, which strained the relationship between the community and the institution.
Prof. Onu explained that in order for the polytechnic and the host community to live in harmony and to avoid the re-occurrence of last year’s clash, the management team had decided to close the institution during the festive period.
He commended the students for the mature way they had comported themselves, urging them not to lose focus while still studying in the institution.
“The last crisis is still fresh in our memory. We don’t want another, no matter the level of provocation. Federal Polytechnic Oko has come of age and we are aspiring to be the number one polytechnic in the country,” Onu said.
