Policemen invade BIRS office, beat staff to coma in Benue

Benue State Police Command has reacted to the report accusing the X-Squad Unit of Police of looting and beating of staff of the Benue State Internal Revenue Services (BIRS).

It was alleged that the new Commander of the Squad demanded for N10m from BIRS, claiming it was an order from the IGP.

The Squad was further alleged to have manhandled Mrs. Mimi Orubibi, the Executive Chairman of BIRS for refusing to agree to the unholy demand.

The development allegedly sparked protest with youths of the states burning tyres and blocking major roads leading to Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Reacting when contacted by DAILY POST Monday night, the state Police PRO, Moses Yamu said the command had commenced investigation on what led to the invasion and assault on the BIRS staff.

He said, “The Inspector General of Police’s order is that all Police actions must conform with the rule of law and respect the fundamental rights of the citizens. This is as set out in the Police creed issued by the IGP.

“It is in view of the foregoing that the command wishes to inform the general public that it has taken immediate action, with the support of the Executive Governor of the State to prevent breakdown of law and order in the State Capital.

“The officer behind the disgraceful act has been identified and investigation has commenced in earnest. The investigation will be handled dispassionately and accorded the seriousness it deserves; with a view to ensuring that the erring Officer and any other Officer found wanting are made to face the full wrath of the law.

“On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP. Ibrahim K. Idris NPM, mni, the Command would like to express its appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Gov. Samuel Ortom and the former Governor of the State, Distinguished Senator George Akume for their support, leadership and understanding which culminated in the quick resolution of the ugly incident, please.”
