A policeman attached to the Orile division of the Nigeria Police Force yesterday lost his life in a car accident while attempting to apprehend a commercial bus driver popularly called Danfo along Oshodi-Apapa expressway of Lagos.
The deceased officer in an attempt to apprehend the commercial bus driver, who was picking up passengers along the road, was said to have jumped into the moving bus.
While attempting to evade arrest, the driver of the bus sped off and in the process hit another car causing the bus to come to a sudden halt. The sudden stop made the deceased who was hanging on the bus to fall off.
It was learnt that a truck immediately ran over the policeman, killing him instantly, though the commercial bus driver and his conductor immediately escaped while abandoning their bus at the scene of the accident.
Operatives of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, and policemen from Trinity and Orile divisions were on ground to clear the gridlock caused by onlookers who wanted to catch a glimpse of the incident.
Explaining what transpired, an eyewitness, Rotimi Baki said, “The policeman jumped into the commercial bus while the bus was moving and picking passengers at the bus stop.
“All of a sudden, the commercial bus driver braked and the policeman fell off and a truck coming from behind hit him. The vehicle in front of the commercial bus had stopped. So the bus driver did same.”
The corpse of the deceased officer was later removed from the scene by officers from the Trinity Police division to Orile Police station before depositing it at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba.
