Men of the Oyo State Police Command on Wednesday whisked away Prince Adeyeye Oyerinde for allegedly parading himself as the new monarch of Iresa-Adu, a community in Surulere Local government area of the state.
DAILY POST learnt that the police whisked Oyerinde away after drafting patrol vehicles and anti-riot policemen to curtail the community from degenerating into arson as youths and indigenes in the area protested the alleged installation of a new monarch for the town.
It was gathered that Oyerinde allegedly paraded himself as the new traditional ruler of the town in defiance to an ongoing litigation over the kingship tussle to fill the vacant stool of Aresa Adu of Iresa-Adu.
Combined efforts of security agencies saved the day for Oyerinde as police whisked him to safety for fear of being lynched.
The stool in contention was last occupied by Oba Jimoh Oloyede for 19 years. Oloyede battled the litigation instituted by the same Oyerinde until he died last December 2018.
Apparently convinced that the last court’s litigation at the appellate court decided in his favour was still subsisting, not minding that the late monarch had also approached the Supreme Court, Oyerinde stormed the town on Wednesday with families and well-wishers amidst pomp and pageantry, to take over the stool.
Eyewitnesses told DAILY POST that on arrival at the town with a carnival-like procession, “angry youths descended on them and vandalized two vehicles before the entourage fled in different direction.”
Reports say there was pandemonium in the ancient town, as youths numbering over 100 took to the streets in protest against Oyerinde, who they described as “an usurper”.
The protesting youths barricaded major roads leading to the town and burnt disused tyres and chanted war songs, challenging Oyerinde to come out of his hiding place, while praise singers and drummers hired by him were also beaten to a pulp during the protest which lasted about five hours.
Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Olugbenga Fadeyi confirmed the development to our correspondent
Fadeyi said the Area Commander in Ogbomoso land in conjunction with the DPOs had been drafted to curtail the crisis.
He said, “As I speak with you, normalcy had returned to the area. Our men are still parading the entire community to ward off further crisis. No arrest has been made but the situation has been brought under control.”
