Four policemen attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Social Offences escaped being lynched on Monday at about 9am in Lagos after they allegedly killed a middle aged man knocked down by a commercial bus driver they were pursuing.
The incident happened around Haruna in Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Monday.
DailyPost gathered that the commercial bus driver, who had violated traffic rules was being pursued by the policemen and in a bid to escape, the driver drove against traffic and knocked down a man, simply identified as Baba Peace, who was at the bus stop, waiting to catch a bus to his place of work.
The policemen, who were pursuing the driver closely, also against traffic rules, then crushed Baba Peace.
The crowd at the bus stop, angered by the development, wanted to lynch the policemen. They however, escaped into one of the estates in the Ikorodu area.
It took a reinforcement from the Owutu Police Station to had prevent the angry crowd from descending on the policemen.
Meanwhile, at Haruna area, the body of Baba Peace was laid in the middle of the road,with the mob fuming for showdown.
His wife was seen wailing uncontrollably.
Policemen from Owutu later arrived and took the body away, while officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA , controlled the resultant traffic.
Contacted, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Damasus Ozoani, explained that information available to the Police revealed that the commercial bus driver allegedly crushed the driver as he attempted to scale through the demarcation wall to facilitate his escape.
He disclosed that the policemen involved in the chase had been arrested and investigation was ongoing.
