Police update on Nyanya explosion: 71 killed, 124 injured in 8 hospitals


After the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the scene of bomb explosion this morning in Nyanya District in the outskirt of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, security agencies have confirmed that 71 persons have so far lost their lives while 124 others have been conveyed to eight hospitals for treatment.

Police spokesman, Frank Mba, disclosed this to journalists on behalf of other security agencies at the scene of the blast.

He added that 16 luxury buses were razed with 24 others destroyed in the blast.

Mba said information centres would be opened at all the hospitals where survivors were being attended to in order to provide information to their families.

Meanwhile, experts from the Bomb Disposal Squad have combed the area, while security agencies have been placed on red alert throughout the territory following the explosion that occurred at about 6.55 a.m.

The Force image maker further stated that agencies are already paying very close attention to all vulnerable points including motor parks.

In the meantime, security agencies have advised the public to avoid unnecessary huge crowd and be security conscious at all times.

Most of the affected passengers were workers and petty traders who were to be conveyed by commercial vehicles to Abuja City Centre.
