Calm has returned to the Rumuosi axis of the East West Road in Obio-Akpor local government area of Rivers state following heavy presence of security operatives in the area.
There had been a heightened tension at the area this weekend when some youths from the area went on rampage following a disagreement that ensued.
Crisis started after the driver of a truck parked at the entrance of a mortuary at the area.
The owner of the mortuary, known as Catechist, had accosted the truck driver over the parking when a fight broke out.
The driver was said to have stabbed Catechist with a dagger during the fight.
The injured man was thereafter rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital but his condition is said to be uncertain at the time of this report.
Angered by the development, the youth of the community went on rampage destroying some trucks.
The tanker driver and his colleague was said to have escaped but were apprehended around Emohua local government area and was allegedly beaten by the angry youths.
The popular yam zone market was also affected during the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Police in Rivers state have assured residents of Rumuosi of frequent security patrol.
Spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni told DAILY POST that the frequent patrol is needed to forestall any breakdown of order.
“The incident that happened is regrettable and it could have been avoided. Rumuosi is a peaceful community. We are surprised that there was such an occurrence.
“We have arrested some of those who led the attack on the Northern community and they are helping us with information.
“What we have done as a command is to direct our patrol teams to frequent Rumuosi. We have restored normalcy and we want to encourage people to go about their normal businesses,” Omoni said.
