The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, CP Damian Chukwu has urged members of the public to be law abiding and always endeavor to report their grievances to the police or other appropriate government agencies.

This was contained in a statement on Monday from the Police Public Relations Officer, Borno state Command, DSP Edet Okon, following the protest by tricycle (Keke) operators in Maiduguri, who alleged extortion by the police.

The statement, which claimed that the illegal collection of levies was by local government authorities, and not police personnel as alleged by the protesters, reads: “Today being 30/07/18, Tricycle Riders within Maiduguri Metropolis embarked on protest alleging illegal collection of levies by Local Government Authourities and non provision of Motor Parks for their operations.

“They were promptly addressed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police incharge of Operations DCP Maiyaki Baba and the State Attorney General/Commissioner of Justice. The situation has been brought under control and no life was lost.”

The Commissioner of Police also called on members of the public to go about their lawful activities without fear as the police will continue working to ensure their safety.
