Police smash child trafficking syndicate in Abia state

UMUAHIA- ABIA State Police Command has for second time in two weeks smashed another child trafficking syndicate in Isialangwa and Osisioma areas of the state.

According to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usman Tilli Abubakar, his men have vowed to smash all the child-trafficking syndicates in the area even as he lamented the high rate of crime in the state.

Abubakar paraded a 32-year-old Obinna Obu from Umudim in Imeziowa, Enugu State who was said to be in negotiation with one Eze Ochiegbu, 25, from Isialangwa South, to sell a six-year Miss Adaobi Obu, the only daughter of Obinna, at a cost of N500, 000.

“Detectives of this command upon information swooped on a syndicate of child trafficking at Tonimas by Umuode Osisisoma as they were negotiation to sell a six year old girl named Adaobi Obu for the sum of five hundred thousand Naira”, the police commissioner said.

He said, however, that the buyer escaped and the girl was rescued, adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Also paraded was another 5-man syndicate alleged to be have trying to induce a pregnant woman, Ogechi Eberechi to deliver her pregnancy so that the baby could be sold at an undisclosed amount.

Members of the syndicate, Abubakar explained, were nabbed at their hideout located in Becoz Eatery in Osisioma and they were said to have come from Rivers, Anambra and Imo states.

Their names were given as Nkeiruka Ogbodo, Uchechi Duru, Ngozi Obasi, Tochukwu Uwakwe and Ugochukwu Okafor, who is the only male member of the syndicate.

The commissioner also paraded an Indian hemp dealer, one Ngozi Aroh, whom was said to have turned her residence in Ogbor Hill area of Aba into criminal hideout.
