Police sergeant who pushed father of 4 to death arrested, detained in Lagos

Following the death of one Mr. Francis Ebonyi Ogbole who was allegedly pushed to death by a police officer in Lagos state, the police command in the state has confirmed the arrest of the culprit.

The Police Command said it arrested and detained the culprit, a sergeant identified as Matthew Oche on Monday.

This is coming after the deceased’s son, Ogbole Pius, accused the police for being behind his father’s death last week.

DAILY POST recalls that Pius, an indigene of Benue State and resident in Lagos state, said some officers of the Lagos State Police Command killed his father after his refusal to bribe them.

According to him, his father was travelling to Benue State July 6 for the burial of his sister and on his way to the Iddo park, Oyingbo, area of the state, escorted by his children which makes four people in the car, they were stopped by stop-and-search policemen with metro police van registration number KSF-176 EE.

He had said, “The policeman requested for all the necessary papers which he presented, then he was entering his car when a policeman, Sergeant Matthew Oche with force number F/NO-372727, said no he can’t leave now because the back glass of his car is tinted.

“Mr. Francis however told him that it was because it’s still early and dark, around 5:30a.m that the glass is not tinted, but the policeman was looking for a way to extort money from him and out of anger, the policeman pushed him and he fell, broke his head and died instantly.”

DAILY POST learnt that the policemen fled the checkpoint after the victim died.

Recent development, however, reveals that the sergeant, Oche was reportedly responsible for the death of Ogbole.

When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, SP Dolapo Badmos, she told our correspondent that one person was arrested.

According to the PPRO, “The culprit is a police sergeant, Matthew Oche and he is being detained at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, SDCI, Yaba.

“Investigations are ongoing and he will be charged to court soon,” noting that the chances of Oche being dismissed from the force are high as the police force is out to curb such acts of corruption and bribery.
