Police recovers hijacked commercial bus, rescues passengers in Rivers

Passengers of the commercial bus which was hijacked last week by suspected kidnappers have been rescued.

A senior police officer from the anti-cultism unit of the Rivers State Police Command who led the operation in collaboration with operatives of IGP Monitoring Unit in the state said all occupants of the diverted vehicle were rescued unhurt.

The officer who pleaded not to be quoted said that the commercial bus was recovered after a gun battle with the hoodlums.

All the rescued victims were taken to the Elele Divisional Police Station where their statements were taken before reuniting them with members of their families.

When contacted, spokesman of the Rivers Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the successful rescue operation, adding that the Commander of the Anti Kidnapping Unit, SP Edward Oshadare led the onslaught on the kidnappers.

“We were all worried when we got the report of the incident and through an actionable intelligence, we traced the kidnappers to their den.

“The operation was led by the Commander of AKU, SP Edward with complement from other tactical units. They stormed the bush and were able to rescue all the passengers on-board unhurt and without ransom.

“Though some of the victims were already weak and frail, the most important is that we rescued them.

“Some arrests were also made, and the suspects are helping us with information. Two buses were found in the bush and our men also recovered some exhibits,” Omoni said.
