Police operatives, suspected kidnapper nearly lynched in Ondo

A suspected kidnapper, Taiwo Ayinde, was on Wednesday nearly lynched by a mob for allegedly abducting a young pupil in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo state.

Ayinde, an 84 year old grandfather, was caught by residents in the Odosida area of the town.

The incident which occurred close to the palace of the Osemawe in Ondo town caused pandemonium.

Eyewitnesses said the octogenarian was caught while dragging the little boy away from the area at about 11am Wednesday.

One of the witnesses, who spoke on anonymity, revealed that the action of the old man prompted suspicious residents to raise an alarm.

The witness said the alleged kidnapper was dragged round by the angry mob.

“The old man was caught, by one of the residents in the area, while he was dragging the little boy to an unknown destination.

“Immediately, an alarm was raised when it became clear that the boy does not know the old man judging by his behaviour.

“He was nearly lynched but thank God for the police who quickly came to rescue him from the hands of the angry mob”, the witness said.

DAILYPOST also gathered that some officers led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Enu Owa Police Station, Mr. Express Omoigui, were almost lynched by the angry mob.

Femi Joseph, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state confirmed the incident to journalists in Akure.

“The information I was gathered from the DPO is that the old man was caught by some residents for attempting to kidnap a little child in the area”, he said.

“And in that process, they pounced on the suspect, beat him to pulp and attempted to lynch him.

“We have commenced investigation into the matter and the man has been moved down to our office here in Akure.

“His family has come forward to say he (suspect) is a mentally deranged person.

“We have asked them to go bring documents showing truly that he is sick” he explained.
