The police in Lagos state have arrested one of the suspected robbers who attacked bank customers and dispossessed them of money in the state.
This is coming after one Kingsley Chukwu, was Thursday shot to death in the Apapa area of the state by a four-man robbery gang who dispossessed him of his cash.
Chukwu, who was a private guard attached to a residential apartment at Creek Road, was on his way to deposit an unspecified amount in one of the new generation banks on Commercial Road when he was attacked on the said day.
The gunmen who rode on two motorbikes were said to have accosted the 26-year-old man when they fired shots.
In his attempt to escape, gun bullets hit Chukwu and he fell, afterwards, one of the robbers approached where he was lying helplessly on the floor and forcefully collected the bag containing the money.
One of the suspected robbers, Olaide Mutairu, has however, been apprehended.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the arrest to newsmen on Tuesday said the 27-year-old suspect was among a gang of robbers that terrorised bank customers in the community.
The PPRO said, Mutairu, an indigene of Oyo state was arrested in the Ilasamaja area of the state.
“He entered Abimbola Street with other gang members on two motorcycles and were about to attack another victim when policemen in the area engaged them in a gun battle.
“While three of the suspects escaped, Mutairu fell off the motorcycle and was apprehended.”
The suspect, however, denied the allegation, saying he was riding a motorcycle when he was attacked and arrested.
He said, “I don’t know what they are talking about. I was on my way to Mile 2, where I live with my mother, when the police stopped me and injured me. I didn’t know what my offence was until I got to the police station. I was the only one on the motorcycle and I don’t have any gun.”
The PPRO said the suspect would be arraigned in court at the end of investigations.
She, however, urged residents of the state to always be on the alert to inform the police on any suspicious movements in their area.
