Police detectives attached to the “A” Division police station in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday arrested six persons suspected to have stolen some cable wires at the newly-constructed Stephen Keshi township stadium in Asaba.
It was gathered that the arrested suspects, among others, recently broke into the stadium premises at night with the alleged assistance of insiders to remove cable wires left for the completion some of the jobs at the facility.
The value of the stolen property was estimated at N400 million, even as the stadium authorities reported the robbery to the police at the “A” Division for investigation.
A staff of the stadium, who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, said: “Works are still going on at the stadium. The cables are still very useful, they are to be used underground at the stadium. The thieves were aided by insiders, and now they have been arrested, they will face the music”.
Unconfirmed sources disclosed that since the stadium become a beehive of activities after its official opening by the state government, thieves have allegedly been frequenting the complex but had not succeeded until recently.
At the PPRO’s office, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka confirmed the arrest of the suspects, saying: “the suspects are being detained for further investigation”.
The police spokesman added that they will be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
