No fewer than four self-professed members of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Joint Task Force, JTF, have been arrested by the police in Kubwa, a satellite town in the FCT.
The yet-to-be named suspects, who usually impound motorcycles from unsuspecting commercial motorcyclists that ply the expressway, were arrested in separate incidences within the Abuja suburb.
The suspects, after impounding the motorcycles, usually disposed them at cheap prices.
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Kubwa Police Station, CSP Nurudeen Sabo, who confirmed the arrest to Daily Trust, said the suspects have been operating in the area for long and that the police have been on their trail since they got wind of their operations.
He said, “The FCT JTF was constituted by the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, to check such nuisances in the territory.
“They were arrested on Friday after five people in a Toyota vehicle accosted a motorcyclist in the guise of being members of the FCT JTF. One of them forcefully collected the motorcycle and was riding away with it when the owner alerted police officers patrolling the area.
“The police officers pursued the suspects who later abandoned the vehicle and fled, handsets and identity cards were recovered from the vehicle.
“The items recovered from the suspects upon their arrests, were taken to the FCT JTF where the ID cards were confirmed to be fake.
“It was through the handset that we arrested three people, while efforts are on to arrest the other two members of the group,” the DPO said, adding that the suspects confessed that they were not members of the task force but only seized motorcycles which they later sold.
“The public should be aware of the activities of the impersonators who claim to be members of the task force. They normally operate in Kubwa and go back to town.
“All the suspects would be charged to court.”
