Police kills criminal suspects during gun battle in Port Harcourt


The Rivers state Police Command says it has killed several criminal elements in the state, boasting that the force was out to subdue all forces of evil in Rivers.

It would be recalled that in recent times, men of the underworld have been on rampage in the state, leading to high rate of kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other heinous crimes in the state.

However, following consistent pressure from the Force headquarters and Zone Six, Calabar, the Rivers state Command has been on its heels in trying to combat crime in the state.

A recent statement from the Command says some armed robbers were killed during a gun battle with police officers along the East-West road in Port Harcourt.

The police also claimed it injured some suspected kidnappers who were trying to escape with their abducted victim, one Richard Otu in Port Harcourt.

The Police in the statement made available by the Command’s Public Relations officer, Ahmad Mohammad said assorted weapons, vehicles and other dangerous weapons were some of the items recovered from the operation.

According to the statement, “At about 2130 hours policemen responding to distress call pursued and engaged suspected kidnappers who abducted one Richard Otu in his Toyata Highlanders jeep while entering his house along East-West road, Port Harcourt.

“Three of the suspected kidnappers got fatally injured during the encounter while the victim and his vehicle were safely rescued. Items recovered from the suspects include one AK 47 rifle, one magazine, five 7.62mm live ammunition, one locally made pistol and one dane gun.

“Around railway Miniokoro policemen on tip off gave a hot chase to a gang of suspected armed robbers and one while two escaped.

“The operation also yielded in the recovery of Toyata Highlander used the gang, two AK 47 rifles, four magazines, 92 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition and money to the tune of 2,350,000 (two million, three hundred and fifty thousand Naira). Investigation continues with a view of possible arrest of the fleeing two.”

The Rivers state police Command appealed to the general public to continue to help the command with helpful information in order to help stem criminality in the state.
