Police kill groom-to-be in Ibadan for “proving difficult”

About to wed Groom, Mr Olusola Adegbegha, 35, was shot dead by a corporal attached to the Mokola Police Station in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The deceased had fixed his wedding date for March and was awaiting the return of his fiancee from Canada for their introduction ceremony this month end.

There are two different accounts of the incident.

The Police on narrating the incident, told the deceased’s brother, Sunkanmi Owoeye, that Adegbegha had proven stubborn and un-cooperative when a corporal requested for a search at Recreation Club area where he was relaxing.

His stubbornness according to them, caused the corporal to take him to the station.

On arriving at the station, Adegbegha allegedly tried to escape with the vehicle, the moment the corporal alighted to open the gate to the station.

The action infuriated the corporal, who immediately reacted by shooting at the car. The bullet penetrated through the rear trafficator of the Mazda 626 car into the thigh of the deceased.

It was gathered that the victim had managed to drive himself to the Group Medical Hospital, where he gave up the ghost even before the hospital gate was opened.

Mr Owoeye disregarded the police’s account, stating that “the claim of the police that my brother was escaping while shot is questionable, because the bullet penetrated the rear of the car and it is quite evident that making a turn in the police station is difficult…we believe that there is more to this and we are asking for justice to prevail over the unjustified killing of our brother.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Commissioner of the state, Mr Clement Adoda, gave an entirely different introduction while giving his account of the incident.

In his account, a stop-and-search patrol team had stopped a green Mazda 626 with plate number PR 61 KJA driven by Adegbegha at about 5.00am.

However, the non-chalant and wild character exhibited by the deceased when enquired of his identity and car ownership, made the patrol team leader assign a corporal to accompany him to the station.

On getting to the station, the deceased tried to escape when the corporal alighted to open the gate. The corporal aimed at the tyre and was unaware that the bullet had hit the deceased since he was still able to escape.

The corporal has being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganaku and the case is presently being investigated, the Deputy Commissioner of Police added.
