Police foil jailbreak attempt in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State

Men of the Ebonyi State Police Command, on Thursday, foiled a jail break attempt by inmates from the Abakaliki prison.

The inmates, who staged a protest inside the prison over poor treatment and inadequate feeding, allegedly disarmed a prison officer in the process.

Gunshots could be heard intermittently as Police officers try to recover the firearm from the inmates.

Police officers have sealed off all roads leading to the prisons, as the fracas has led to the loss of some lives.

In the heat of the contention, inmates staged a jailbreak and had already succeeded in creating an opening on the wall before anti-riot policemen arrived and thwarted their move, Nation reports.

Reacting to the incident, the State Police Command Spokesman, George Okafor, said, “There was an attempted jailbreak and the prisons called in the police. We cordoned off the area and restored nomalcy to the area

“We will brief you later on the issue once everything have been sorted out”.
