The Delta State Police Command has disowned two mobile police corporals who allegedly shot and killed a man at a private school premises in oil city of Warri on November 16, 2015.
DAILY POST reports that a national daily had last Tuesday reported the gruesome shooting to death of Mr. Nsika Amos by two police corporals attached to Mopol 36, Birnin- Kebbi, but on special duty in Delta State.
Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Celestina Kalu in a statement Wednesday in Asaba, said the duo of Corporals Ademoye Segun and Danazumi Mohammed have been arrested and awaiting prosecution.
“On November 17, 2015 the Vanguard Newspaper carried a story with the caption, “Police officers run riot in Delta, kill man” at its page 2.
“In order to set the record straight, the Command wishes to state that on 5th November, 2015 at about 0100hrs, one Mr. Nsika Amos of No. 2 Omarekwe Street, Okrede-Urhibo Warri, was allegedly shot dead by two policemen, Cpl. Ademoye Segun and Cpl. Danazumi Mohammed.
“Both officers were attached to Mopol 36 Birnin Kebbi, but on special duty at Eagle Height International school Warri, Delta State, and residing in the same compound with the deceased.
Kalu said that investigation conducted, revealed that on the fateful day, Corporal Ademoye Segun had noticed the movement of the deceased whose identity was then not known to the corporal, within the compound.
She said that the corporal suspecting that the deceased might be a criminal, alerted his colleague, Corporal Danazumi Mohammed who took position in a bathroom within the compound while he returned to his room.
According to the police spokesperson, Ademoye later shot at the supposed criminal through the unopened window of his room without due observation while Corporal Mohammed fired into the air from the bathroom where he took position.
“It was however later discovered that the person shot was the deceased, Nsika Amos residing upstairs of the same building that reportedly came down to remove the cloths he hang on the rope in the compound,” Kalu said.
She explained that following the shooting, the victim was rushed to Central Hospital Warri for treatment where he gave up the ghost.
The police image maker further stated that in response to the incident, the two officers were arrested and handed over to homicide detectives, SCID Asaba for discreet investigation.
“The two corporals are currently undergoing orderly room trial after which any of them found culpable of the murder of Nsika Amos will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
“The Command will not shield any of its personnel who violate the law from prosecution,” Kalu said.
