A police corporal is currently cooling his heels in the custody of the Edo State Police Command for killing two women at a funeral in Ivhiokhile quarters, Fugar, in Etsako Central Local Government Area of the State.
The tragedy happened over the weekend when the yet-to-be identified police officer’s gun went off while trying to usher in his principal, a traditional ruler, into a vehicle. One Sandra Imhaku, was said to have been hit by the stray bullet consequently leading to her death.
DAILY POST gathered that the weapon went off when the corporal was trying to open the vehicle door for the traditional ruler to enter, adding that he was holding the rifle with on one hand.
The stray bullet was said to have narrowly missed a two-month old baby strapped on the back of one of the deceased before hitting her in the neck while sitting among other guests at the funeral.
Imhaku was rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Irrua area of the state where she gave up the ghost on Sunday.
The other woman hit by the stray bullet, Mrs. Saliu, who hails from Delta State, who was said to have died at the spot.
It was further learnt that the corporal was later apprehended.
Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, said he has been briefed on the incident, adding that the affected officer would be arraigned in court when the police conclude its investigations.
“The officer has been arrested and investigation has commenced and very soon, on completion of the investigation, he will be arraigned in court,” Adegbuyi said.
