Police Commissioner begs UMTH for understanding over unprofessional display of officers

The Borno state Police Commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi was at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,UMTH, about four hours after some police officers numbering about twenty (20) went on rampage, causing serious physical and emotional damage to both staff and patients in the hospital.

But Dr. Mohammed Yahaya, a senior registrar, Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, who is also the President of Association of Resident Doctor told DailyPost in an interview that they had endured enough humiliation by the police, and were not longer ready to take what happen today lightly.

He further affirmed that he had declared an indefinate strike with immediate effect from today (Wednesday), because according to him, they have been working with the management of the hospital as well as the security for the common good of the people, but that the police have remained the only torn in their flesh.

He said they have left the comfort of their houses to save lives, but the police, particularly are not appreciative of what they are doing as such, the hospital is no longer safe for the to operate.

” We demand an unreserved apology from the higher authority of the police and assurance that such would never happened again, if we are to return to duty. They beat up our professors, they beat up our teachers our doctors are right now on admission with fracture as a result of police madness. They brought the corpses of 35 policemen killed in Bama and we tried to explain to them that there was no space at the morgue, but they wouldn’t listen.

Also speaking, a medical scientist (name withheld), who was beaten up and his handset collected told DailyPost that, he was busy trying to get the medical result of some patients when the mobile policemen broke in and started beating everybody and shooting sporadically.

” It was sad and pathetic, a rather uncivilized and unprofessional way of doing things. Dr. Abba Kabir, who has been attending to patients is now being attended to because of the police” He lamented.
