Police arrests fisherman for allegedly killing colleague

The Police in Lagos have arrested a 28-year-old fisherman, (name withheld) for allegedly beating his colleague, one Suleiman Kareem, 26, to death during a fishing expedition. The incident happened while the two friends argued over where to fish.

Sources told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the duo went out for fishing expedition, but had argument over who should occupy some areas to fish.

NAN gathered that the duo went to Itegbin waters in Okokomaiko area of Lagos on Monday at about 4 p.m where the incident happened.

Sources said that the suspect had warned Kareem not to operate within the spot he was, but declined, saying there is no limitation to where he could fish.

NAN gathered that Kareem’s resistance led to an argument where the suspect allegedly vowed to deal with him when they returned to the shore.

“It was after fishing, the quarrel resumed at the waterside and degenerated into a scuffle. They started insulting each other.

“It was in the process that the suspect brought out a charm and used it to beat Kareem.

“He fell and before people could rally round to take him to a hospital, he died,’’ a source said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the suspect was arrested for investigation.

Badmos said that the deceased had been deposited at the Badagry General Hospital mortuary, while the case was under investigation.

“At about 6 p.m. on Monday, while a police team from Ajangbadi Division was patrolling Itegbin waterside, it saw a crowd near Baale’s house.

“It was discovered that one Suleiman Kareem of Babakuda bus stop, Itegbin, was allegedly beaten to death by the suspect over disagreement about fishing area in a river.

“The corpse was evacuated to Badagry General Hospital, while suspect was detained for investigation,’’ she said.
