Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, attached to the Enugu State Police Command yesterday arrested two alleged cultists for initiating some members in the state capital.
According to the Command’s spokesman, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, the suspects were apprehended on September 19 at Ogui area of the state.
Amaraizu identified the suspects as, Benjamin Ofuoke from Izzi in Ebonyi State and Collins Chukwu from Ezioha in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
He disclosed that the suspects and some other cult members now at large, had on September 19 converged for cult initiations at Ogui area of the state capital, adding that they were apprehended following a tip-off.
The command’s spokesperson noted that on sighting the police, some of the alleged cult members opened fire enabling others to escape. He added that the two suspects were arrested, while a manhunt for the others had commenced.
Ofuoke who claimed to be a carpenter however regretted joining the cult group, while Chukwu revealed that he was lured into jining the JVC Confraternity in 2012 by one of his friends from Emene in Enugu.
“I have been struggling to leave the group since my brother, Amaechi Chukwu, was killed in 2012 by rival cult group in Emene,” he said
The police recovered black scarves allegedly used to cover the faces of their new members during the ceremony.
