The police command in Bayelsa said it had arrested the suspected mastermind of a failed kidnap attempt on the Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Chief Remember Ogbe.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa, Mr Asinim Butwat, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Saturday.
Butwat said that the prompt manhunt for the suspected kidnappers had yielded results as one of the suspected kidnappers was already in police net.
The police spokesman said men of the Anti Kidnap unit of the Bayelsa Police Command arrested the suspected mastermind of the foiled attempt, one Seigha Oduwaiye, 24, from Akassa in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
He added that the suspect had made useful statements, while operatives of the Anti Kidnap unit had intensified efforts to arrest other suspects still at large.
Two policemen lost their lives due to gunshot injuries during the incident and their remains were undergoing autopsy at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
He recalled that “on Thursday, July 30, at about 8 p.m., four daredevil gunmen stormed the residence of the Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Hon. Remember Ogbe, at Amassoma in Southern Ijaw to abduct him.
“They were engaged in a gun battle with policemen attached to the chairman.
“The unknown gunmen retreated, but two police corporals lost their lives due to injuries sustained in the encounter.
“Corpses of the deceased policemen were deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary, Yenagoa, for autopsy.’’ (NAN)
