The Police anti-crime team attached to the Delta state Police Command, Asaba, has arrested six suspected assassins in last Saturday night’s murder of the Sapele Butchers’ Association chairman, Mr. Michael Onyeachi Nweke.
Police spokesperson in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects to DAILY POST, said, “We have arrested six persons in connection with the murder. They are currently being detained at the state CID for thorough investigation, the case is ongoing, and will get to the root of the murder”.
DSP Aniamaka, speaking further on Wednesday in Asaba, explained that there was suspicion of internal wrangling, and strife in the association, adding that the Police and other security agencies were working to ensure that the killers of Butchers association chairman are brought to book.
It was gathered that the Butchers Association chairman, Mr. Nweke was allegedly murdered on Saturday night around 9pm right inside the Sapele market by unknown gunmen while he was rounding off the sales of the day.
Sources said Nweke was the only one left in the market when assailants attacked him with gun and knives, leaving him in a pool of blood with no help on sight as he bled to death.
Mr. John Nweke, his brother told DAILY POST that, “it’s painful because it was a case of assassination. They just killed my brother for envy. We will get to the root of the murder. He was easy going, and chairman of Butchers Association in Sapele, he also sells cows, I don’t know why anybody would want to kill him “.
But his wife, Mrs. Nweke stated that before the murder, her late husband had a dream where he was killed by his friends after minor disagreement, adding that on the fateful day she pleaded with the husband to stay at home to no avail.
Unconfirmed sources disclosed that the late chairman was fond of going back to the market every night to help night guards on security issues.
Since the incident, there has been palpable tension in Sapele and its environs as investigations revealed that residents now sleep with one eye open.
