Police arrest five over attack on Benue monarch


Five persons have been arrested in Benue State in connection with last weekend’s attack on the residence and palace of the Chairman of the Makurdi Council of Chiefs and Ter Makurdi, Chief Sule Abenga.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Austine Ezeani, made this disclosure to newsmen in the state capital on Tuesday.

Ezeani, however, said investigations were still ongoing.

He said the command had drafted a detachment of Mobile Police officers to the residence to thwart further attacks on the palace.

Ezeani said: “the Area Commander in charge of Makurdi, has also initiated peace moves among residence of Welfare Quarters, where the palace is located in order to find lasting solution to the crisis.

“Though investigation into the matter is still ongoing, and I can assure you that the police will get to the root of the matter in order to ensure that peace reigns,” he said.

Some unidentified persons had last Saturday morning, sacked the palace of the paramount ruler of Makurdi town, over the alleged involvement of one of the Chief’s sons in series of criminal activities in the town.
