Police arrest 7 for stealing electricity cables in Bayelsa


The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested seven suspected cable vandals and a tricycle thief in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Nasiru Oki, while parading the suspects at the state police command on Wednesday, said seven of the suspects specialized in removing cables belonging to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company in the state.

He said the seven cable vandals were arrested alongside one Abu Sule, the Chief Security Officer of ITB, a contracting firm to a hospital owned by the Bayelsa State Governmment.

The CP said the suspects were arrested on Sunday in the Swali market area of Yenagoa, while loading the cables into a vehicle for onward sale, adding that the market value of the stolen cables ran into millions of naira.

On the tricycle thief, Oki said the suspect specialised in snatching tricycles, popularly called, ‘Keke-Napep’.

He lamented that the act of stealing tricylces had become rampant in the state.

While stressing that the police would not hesitate to prosecute suspects accordingly, he added he would ensure that the stealing of tricyle and vandalism of PHEDC cables be reduced drastically.
