The Oyo State Police Command said on Saturday that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash that occurred between two factional groups of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), on Thursday.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu in a short telephone conversation with DAILY POST in Ibadan, said that though investigation to unravel the causes of the clash is still ongoing, two suspects have been arrested.
Ajisebutu who said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has swung into action to investigate the root cause of the matter and brought perpetrators into book also confirmed that one person who was gunned down during the melee Thursday evening has died.
The Police spokesperson who did not reveal the identity of the arrested suspects said they are still in the investigation department for further interrogation and investigation.
He said, “Yes, there was a clash on Thursday between OPC members. We have arrested two people in connection with the clash.
“The CID is investigating the matter, two people have been arrested. We have arrested two people and the CID is still investigating the matter”.
DAILY POST had reported on Friday that two factions of OPC, one led by Otunba Gani Adams and the other, OPC New Era clashed at the Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba where a summit of Yoruba christened “Ibadan Declaration” titled “Yoruba Standpoint on Restructuring” was held.
The clash led to the death of one person who is said to belong to Gani Adams group while many others including a strong member of the OPC New Era Group, Mr. Adesina Akinpelu were seriously injured.
A golf car with registration number JJJ 784 AS was damaged during the franca.
Akinpelu who was said to have been injured with several weapons such as guns, cutlasses, stones and sticks was later taken to Police Hospital, Eleyele where he has been receiving treatment since then.
It was gathered that it took the intervention of the DPO of Mokola Police station and other security men who intervened to save Akinpelu’s life and ensure that the clash did not escalate.
Akinpelu while speaking with journalists on his hospital bed however fingered Gani Adams for his ordeal.
He alleged that Gani Adams allegedly instructed his squad to kill him (Akinpelu) who is the arrow head of the struggle to remove Gani Adams as leader of the group for a very long time .
Akinpelu disclosed that he was on his way to disburse money for some of their members who traveled to Ibadan for the event when he was attacked ,adding that the sum of four hundred and thirty thousand, (430,000) naira was stolen from him by the attackers.
He stated that it was the timely intervention of men of the Nigeria police that saved him from been killed while stating that the squad was led by the duo of one Top Terror and one Sunday Babalola who led the team that attacked him.
“I was coming out to sort out the transport fares of our members who traveled to Ibadan for the program and as I approached the gate three of the stadium, Gani’s alleged killer squad had destroyed one of our vehicles.
“I was examining the damage when Sunday Babalola pointed at me and the boys rushed to attack me”.
However, efforts to get the reaction of Gani Adams as at the time of filling this report have proved abortive.
Calls put through to the mobile phone of his (Gani Adams) Personal Assistant, Mr. Segun Olalekan Akanni by DAILY POST Saturday afternoon to react to the allegations were not answered.
