The Police in Ugep, in Yakurr local government area of Cross River State have arrested two suspects alleged to have killed two police officers of the Division.
The two policemen, according to DAILY POST investigations were Sgt. Abani Eteng and Corp. Christopher Uket. They were killed at their duty post at the Institute of Technology and Management (ITM) Ugep by unknown gunmen.`
“The two policemen who reported for duty penultimate Wednesday were attacked by unknown gunmen who opened fire on them at ITM premises at about 8: 00pm” a source who pleaded that his name should not be mentioned said.
“The sergeant was with an AK47 but the other officer was not with any; they were at their duty post when all of a sudden unknown gun men stormed the place and opened fire on them”.
“They were supposed to be four in that team, so they were said to be waiting for two other colleagues to join them at ITM, but unfortunately the incident occurred before the other two officers arrived.
“The incident occurred at about 8:00pm on that day. Uket who is an indigene of Mkpani died on the spot while Eteng who is from Ugep died the following day, at the Ugep General Hospital, his AK47 riffle was also collected,” the source added.
“A family member of one of the deceased, Bright Ekesi hinted that Uket will be buried on the 24th of February, but appealed to the police to make sure that their brother’s killer was brought to book.
“We know he is gone, we know he cannot come back anymore, but let the police do a thorough job, let his killers be brought to book as soon as possible because justice delayed is justice denied, we want the Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa to look into the matter, we are aggrieved, we are pained, we are not happy,” he lamented.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo who confirmed the incident said they were still investigating the matter, adding that they already had two people in custody.
“Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of the two police officers and they are being interrogated, although we have not recovered the AK47 riffle they collected from one of the deceased policemen but we shall get to the root of the matter”, she said.
