The Police in Ebonyi State have arrested two suspected burglars believed to have been terrorizing Abakaliki residents for a long time. DSP George Okafor, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ebonyi Command, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.
Okafor said that two other members of the gang are “on the run’’.
The Police PRO added that they were arrests took place after a tip-off.
He said, “Residents of Abraham Enyita Street in Abakaliki gave us a distress call on the burglars’ operations and we mobilised our officers, who stormed the scene and arrested the duo.
“During interrogation, we discovered that they were both residents of Izuogu street in Abakaliki, as we recovered tools such as cutters used in destroying people’s doors at home and at their shops.
“They confessed that their fleeing accomplices always mounted guard for them and secured their booties while they destroyed people’s doors and windows to steal their property,” he said.
He stated that efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects for prosecution.
He said the aim is to deter other miscreants from committing crime.
Mr Abel Igwe, whose wife’s shop was burgled by the suspects, said he was informed of the deed by a neighbour through a distress call.
“We immediately contacted the police, who stormed the scene, arrested the burglars and recovered the items stolen from my wife’s shop,” he said.
Another victim, Mrs Anna Edigbo, said she arrived at her shop one fateful morning only to discover that it had been burgled.
“Items stolen from my shop include deep freezer, gas cooker, 24 litres of vegetable oil, two buckets of sugar, N20, 000 and snacks worth N500.
“I started wailing and sympathizers informed me that some burglars have been arrested and taken to the state police headquarters.
“I rushed to the state command and saw the suspected burglars, who confessed that the items inside my shop were carted away by their fleeing gang-members,” she said. (NAN)
