Police arraigns three Osun students for beating teacher to stupor


For beating and hauling stones at their teacher to the extent that the latter suffered ankle dislocation, three male secondary school students in Osogbo, Osun state South-West, Nigeria have been dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate Court.

The trio, students of St. Mark’s Anglican Grammar School Kola Balogun area, Osogbo were said to have descended on their class teacher, Mr. Osho Bamidele Samuel and beat him black and blue.

This situation was said to have thrown the school and its environs into confusion as other teachers and students ran for safety.

The accused male students are: Haruna Waliu, 19; Adebayo Abeeb, 19; and Oladimeji Tunde, 21.

According to the police prosecution who dragged the students to court in their school uniform, they committed the alleged offence on 24th October, 2014 at the premises of St. Mark’s Anglican Grammar School, Kola Balogun Area, Osogbo.

According to the charge sheet obtained in court, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Isiaka Ajadi, informed the court that the victim sustained dislocation on his two hands as a result of the severe beaten meted on him by the students.

Ajadi also argued that the accused persons caused a breach of public peace by stoning their teacher on the school premises.

He, therefore, told the court that the alleged crime were contrary to and punishable under Sections 351and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

But the accused students pleaded not guilty to the three count charges of conspiracy, assault and breach of public peace leveled against them by the police.

However, their counsel, Mr. W. A. Idowu orally applied for their bail saying the students would not abuse the bail if granted.

Idowu said he had educated both the accused persons and their parents, stressing that parents of the students were ignorant of the implications of their wards’ actions.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Muhammed Lasisi, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and advised the parents of the accused, who were present in the courtroom to caution their children.

The case was adjourned till 9th February, 2015 for hearing.
