Plateau State civil servants have embarked on strike in compliance with the directive by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman in the state, Jubril Bancir.
Government-owned establishments were yesterday deserted as most workers stayed away.
The gates leading to state secretariat in Jos, the state capital were locked while police kept watch.
Plateau State NLC had recently directed all its affiliate unions and workers to commence mobilisation for a strike at the expiration of its ultimatum to the state government, which expired on Monday.
NLC State Chairman, Jibrin Bancir, gave the directive while briefing newsmen recently on the occasion of the 2015 Workers Day.
According to him, labour had negotiated for a long time with the state government for the peaceful resolution of their dispute but without success.
Bancir said workers had several issues that had lingered over the past years in spite of their effort to have them resolved.
The issue, the labour leader pointed out, include outstanding arrears of minimum wage, non-payment of salaries and promotion of staff. .
